Matchmaker grant

$2000 to be raised in funds by Artist
$2000 Matched amount by Mississauga arts council
Section 2: Project Information
  1. Project Title - What Does Music look like as Art (Working Title)
  2. Project Elevator Pitch (25 word outline of your project)* - Music can navigates our emotions, experiences and heightens our senses. What happens when an Artist can translate music into painting? How would this look like?

    Detailed Project Description

This project involved two core team members, Angela Chao, Visual Artist and Amy Di Nino, Music Therapist. This project is broken down into 5 segments showcasing 5 unique genres of music, R&B Soul, Electro Pop, Country, Native Flute, Classical. Each segment will be released roughly every 3 weeks once completed.  Within each segment Angela will listen to the selected music and
interpret her emotions into a painting, including the colors, movement and textures of the song on canvas. Once completed the art will be dissected by Music therapist and president to Music Therapy association of Ontario, Amy Di Nino. She will  speak about different forms of music, the history of that style of music and connect the Art and Music.

Each Segment will be edited in this format

45 second introduction - Angela will speak about the selected piece of music. She will reflect on how she feels, what does she see, what colors, images.
2min-3 min song - Two videos will be shot and intercut with each other. A - Angela Painting, She will edit this together. B - A video of Amy talking about the Art and History.  These two videos will be intercut and edited by key editor, Filip Plaskota who will add dynamic, elements, graphics.
45 second conclusion - Amy will speak and end the video and tie in Art and Music.

The end result is a under 5 minute video shot and edited in 16:9 which will be shared on Facebook and Youtube. The key images will be kept in 1:1 ratio so once we post a short 1 minute segment on TikTok and Instagram the information is still protected and will not be cropped out. The Tik tok and instagram posts are not budgeted into this grant, as they contain a different format, and duration they will need to be re-edited by Angela at a later date. We will aim to do this parallel to the Youtube release but it is not set in stone and not budget in for time and money.
This youtube video is an example of what we created for this Grant Proposal, edited by Angela.

  2. How will this project help the artistic and career development of those involved?
This project will give me the opportunity to share what I feel, what I see, what I envision when I listen to music and how this directly affects the way I create. Since the concussion I've had an ability to connect, with people, my emotions, and an over all 'vibe' of anything. I see a painting and can capture the exact mood, color and elements. During the Feel It Project, our first Grant with Mississauga Arts council, I had the opportunity to take an emotion, take a piece of music by Anthony Barr and explore with paint on canvas. More info here This Fusion grant was the first time I explored using music to guide my artwork.

Some customers are able to feel the music in the art. They can connect without the words. The music and emotions are embossed into the artwork through colors and textures. Art is the unspoken language that embeds the music within itself.

  3. What is the artists’ connection to the Mississauga Arts Sector and how will this project positively impact audiences/communities in Mississauga.

The lead on this project, Angela Chao lives in Mississauga for over 30 years, previously in Meadowvale and currently in Erin Mills. She is also Programs Manager of Styleworthy studio located in Streetsville. This will have a large positive effect on others as this video will showcase musicians, music and their talents from Mississauga or have a Mississauga connection. This will allow the musicians involved to see their music as art. The art work will then be displayed as its created at Styleworthy Studio. All 5 pieces will be exhibited near the end of the grant as a free exhibition called "Art As Music" It will also list in writing "Inspired by: This musician"

There will be a few live painting events happening in Streetsville on a Saturday at Center Square where I will be listening to the selected album and song while I paint. This is great for the community to come watch, listen and even bring a sketch book and draw while I create. This will be promoted on Angela's Social Media, Style worthy as well as Streetsville BIA as a weekend event.

Additional INfo

Between the grant period Angela and Amy will create a series of art and music videos through TikTok. This is not part of our 4 listed segments. This will only involve two people, and edited by Angela. We will use music that is opened to the public.  These videos will not be part of our actual grant videos. They will be created more casually, with less editing, less dynamics and under 1 minutes. Martys Hub and Mississauga Arts council will be tagged on the respected social media. There is no money involved or artist fees. We are simply doing this out of our own time and pockets promote what is to come with our more professionally edited, stylized videos with graphics.

Before this, we will collectively choose a unused hashtag in which all these videos will be published as.

About the Team

Angela Chao - Visual Artist

Angela,  uses art to communicate and process  her emotions arising from her head injury. In 2017, she was named Emerging Visual Artist of the year by the  Mississauga Arts Council and in 2018 was the recipient of the Modern Heritage and Community Heritage Award for spreading mental health awareness through art, locally. As a constant inspiration to herself, and others, Angela is committed to sharing her concussion experience to help others overcome their own darkness with a passion. When she paints her subconscious is speaking what she cannot express through words. Painting is her form of communication.

Angela is currently the Programs Manager at StyleWorthy Studio in Streetsville Mississauga. This studio is focused on bringing creative workshops featuring arts, music and poetry/writing to improve our mental health and bring more accessible support programs to the community.

Before the concussion I was much more joyful, now I am faced with many challenges and it’s hard to put into words who I am, and how I feel, so I paint.  When I create art, I have this need inside me to release some emotions like depression, anxiety and sadness.  Painting helps me process these emotional barriers and makes me feel better, its my own go to therapy when I’ve had a stressful week at work. Creating art is essential to my own healing process, it’s a journey that continues as I navigate my life and try to discover the new me.
